Claude Cowork: tutorial, pricing
and use cases for entrepreneurs

Install, use and secure Cowork, with 5 concrete examples to reproduce.

You already use Claude to write, summarize or analyze, but every task still forces you to copy, paste, rename and file the result yourself. Cowork changes that logic: you describe the result you expect, and Claude carries out the task from start to finish, on your files and tools. This Claude Cowork tutorial explains what the tool does, what it costs, how to install and use it, with concrete examples for entrepreneurs and the precautions to take before handing it your work.

What is Claude Cowork?

Cowork is a Claude feature, Anthropic's AI assistant, designed for complex, multi-step tasks. Where a regular conversation produces an answer, Cowork produces finished work: a spreadsheet with working formulas, a presentation, a formatted document, a sorted folder.

In practice, Claude can:

  • work in the folders you choose on your computer: read, create and organize files;
  • use your connected tools through connectors, plugins and Skills;
  • browse the web with a built-in browser: open pages, read them, fill in forms;
  • split the work into subtasks run in parallel;
  • keep working when you close your laptop, for sessions started in the cloud;
  • run scheduled tasks at regular intervals.

You see every step: the files opened, the tools used and the choices made. That is what makes Cowork suited to an entrepreneur's real work, not just to demos.

Claude Cowork: pricing and plans

Cowork is included in Claude's paid plans. Here are the benchmarks at the time of writing (September 2026):

  • Pro, about $20 per month (about $17 per month billed annually): Cowork included, within the Pro plan's usage limits.
  • Max, from $100 per month: Cowork with much higher usage limits, useful if you hand it long tasks every day.
  • Team and Enterprise: Cowork available for teams, enabled by the account admin on the Enterprise plan.

Prices change regularly: always check the current rates on Anthropic's website.

Is Claude Cowork free? Is there a free trial?

No. At the time of writing, Cowork is not available on Claude's free plan, and there is no dedicated free trial. The simplest way to test it is to subscribe to one month of Pro with monthly billing, then decide based on the hours saved. Be wary of websites promising a "free Cowork": they are not official services.

How to install Claude Cowork

Cowork is available from three places, with the same account:

  1. The Claude desktop app (Mac or Windows), downloaded from Claude's official website. It is the most complete version: only the desktop app lets Claude access the files on your computer, your browser and your local apps. Available on all paid plans.
  2. The web, at claude.ai, in beta for the Pro, Max and Team plans.
  3. Mobile, in the Claude app for iPhone and Android, also in beta for the Pro, Max and Team plans.

On the web and mobile, sessions run on Anthropic's servers: the task continues even if your device is offline, and you find the result on any device. Note: for a cloud session to read or edit files on your computer, the desktop app must stay open on that machine.

Claude Cowork in other languages

Claude understands and writes many languages, French included, to a high standard. You can write your Cowork requests in your own language and get documents, spreadsheets and presentations in that language.

How to use Claude Cowork: the 5-step tutorial

  1. Create a dedicated working folder. Rather than opening your entire drive, prepare a "Cowork" folder containing only the files needed for the task.
  2. Describe the result, not the steps. Say what you want to get, in what format, with what criteria. Claude builds the action plan itself.
  3. Choose the approval mode. Cowork offers manual approval of each action, automatic approval, or no approvals at all. Start in manual mode: you will see how Claude works before giving it more latitude.
  4. Follow along and correct as you go. Claude displays each step. If a direction does not suit you, say so, as you would with a team member.
  5. Schedule what recurs. A task that works well can be scheduled with the /schedule command: every Monday, every month-end, every morning.

Writing a good Cowork request

An effective Cowork request contains five elements. The more precise they are, the fewer corrections you will have to make:

  • The goal: the expected deliverable (a spreadsheet, a report, a sorted folder).
  • The sources: the folders, files, websites or connected tools to use, and only those.
  • The format: file type, structure, naming, length.
  • The quality criteria: what makes a result successful for you, with an example if possible.
  • What to do when in doubt: should Claude ask you, flag the case or skip it?

This last point is often forgotten. Yet it is what prevents Claude from filling a gap in information with an assumption. Our prompt engineering guide for beginners covers these techniques in depth.

Here is an example of a first request to copy:

"In the "September invoices" folder, read all supplier invoices. Create a spreadsheet with the date, supplier, amount before tax, VAT and total amount, with a total per supplier. Rename each file in the format YYYY-MM-DD_supplier_amount. Flag any unreadable or incomplete invoice instead of guessing."

Claude Cowork: 5 examples for entrepreneurs

The durations given are orders of magnitude: your gain depends on your volume.

1. Prepare your monthly bookkeeping

Sorting and renaming receipts, a summary spreadsheet ready for your accountant. Often one to two hours saved every month.

2. Produce a weekly report

"Every Monday at 8 a.m., gather the week's sales figures in the shared spreadsheet, compare them with the previous week and prepare a one-page summary with the three points to watch."

3. Run competitive research

Claude visits your competitors' websites, records their offers and public prices and compiles everything in a comparison table. Our AI research and monitoring guide helps you choose what to track.

4. Turn notes into deliverables

From your meeting notes, Cowork prepares the sales proposal, the matching presentation and the cover email, which you review before sending.

"From my notes of the meeting with [client] ("Meeting notes" file), prepare a sales proposal based on the "Standard proposal" document, a 6-slide presentation summarizing it, and a 100-word cover email. Save everything in the "Proposals/[client]" folder."

Hours saved: often an hour or more per proposal, depending on its complexity.

5. Review contracts in bulk

Drop in several contracts or terms and conditions: Claude lists the clauses to check (term, termination, penalties) in a table. It does not replace legal advice, but it saves you the time of the first read.

Claude Cowork vs Claude Code, ChatGPT and n8n

Claude Cowork vs Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic's tool for software development: it writes, edits and tests code. Cowork applies the same autonomous execution logic to office work: documents, spreadsheets, research, file organization. If you do not develop software, Cowork is the tool for you. If you want to build an app, our Claude Code tutorial for beginners is a better starting point.

Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT

ChatGPT also offers an agent mode able to chain actions. The choice mostly depends on your habits: Cowork stands out for working directly in your computer's folders and for Claude's writing quality. Our ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini comparison details the strengths of each.

Claude Cowork vs n8n

n8n is an automation tool: you build a fixed workflow, triggered by an event (a form submitted, an email received), that runs exactly the same way every time. Cowork is more flexible: you describe a goal in plain language and Claude adapts its steps. For a high-volume flow that must run without variation, n8n remains better suited; for a task that requires judgment and writing, Cowork is faster to set up. The two combine very well. Our n8n, Make and Zapier comparison helps you choose an automation tool.

Limits and precautions

Anthropic's documentation reminds users that they remain responsible for every action Claude takes on their behalf. A few simple rules:

  • Limit access to dedicated folders, and avoid opening financial documents, credentials or personal data without a reason.
  • Stay in manual approval for sensitive tasks, new tools and actions that are hard to undo.
  • Be careful with web content. A page may contain hidden instructions designed to hijack the AI: limit browsing to trusted sites.
  • Start scheduled tasks with simple cases, with no high-stakes actions, and regularly review past runs.
  • Keep backups of your important files.
  • Watch your usage: automatic approval mode consumes more of your usage allowance.

For client data, also review the privacy settings of your Claude account and share only what is strictly necessary.
